I like to encourage my kids (at least the
4-year-old and
2.5-
year
-
old) to try new foods. Tonight’s new food: papaya. Given that we live in Canada, I really have no idea how a good papaya is supposed to taste, let alone how to pick a good one at the grocery store. I did spend two weeks in southeast Asia, and had some there that was hit or miss.
A few weeks ago we tried dragon fruit, and they were okay with that. But the papaya? I knew as soon as I started cutting it up that it was going to be... interesting. Mrs. BaconSandwich was the first to try it. (She said it was disgusting). Despite that, the kids still tried it. Looks of disgust round. I admit, the flavour was... odd. It reminded me of the smell of a dirty diaper. I managed to eat a small piece, but I am thinking that either we picked a bad one, or it just tastes bad.
For those of you in more tropical regions - how is papaya supposed to taste?
(At least I’ve got to give the kids credit this time. They actually surprised me by trying it. Getting these kids to try new foods is an exercise in patience/frustration.

Papaya kinda tastes like a melon with some undertone kinda reminiscent of mango and banana if I had to explain it.
It’s one of those fruits that has a flavor, but you can’t really describe unless you’ve had it.
As for the smell, it can be comparable to feet, so your comment about the pungent smell is accurate.

I’m wondering if I leave it to ripen (even after cutting it up) if it will make the smell better or worse.

Here’s miss 2.5 year old after trying it:

If it makes you feel better, I make that same face when I see a sweet plantain.
As for the leftover papaya, try this out and see if you like it. It’s the most common way to get kids into papaya and mango.

I’m sure you can find the soda needed at your local Latino market.

I remember it being creamy and sweet. Papaya mixes well with milk for a nice smoothie.

I don’t think you picked a bad one. To me it tastes like melon with a hint of vomit. My parents are trying to grow a tree at home. Mum blends it into a smoothie. B y itself... W hich is about as disgusting as you’d expect.

I'm thinking I might try dehydrating it.

Slice it. Squeeze lime juice over it. Sprinkle it with sugar.
Only way to it eat it unless it is 100% ripe.

Hmm, that may work.

At this point, I don't think I could make it any worse, so it's worth a shot.

That’s how they showed us to eat it in Mexico. It is great like that, if it’s ripe. If If isn’t ripe, then it’s hard and sort of flavorless

how did the dragon fruit go? One of my girls liked it and the othe r just looked at it and said get lost. I thought it kinda tasted like a apple. With the way a dragon fruit looks, you would think you would trip balls after eating it.

Ha ha! I think miss 2.5 year old though it was okay, but miss 4 year old didn’t care for it so much. It was perhaps a bit on the ripe side, so tasted a bit dusty. It was watery, crunchy, and not really that flavourful.
Another one we tried was a Canary Mellon. It was actually really good, and everyone liked it. It was like a sweeter version of a honeydew melon. I find so often that honeydew around here is picked way too early and is sort of crunchy without any flavour. Maybe we just picked a good one, but it was really tasty. I saved some seeds from it, germinated them, and am trying to grow a few in the windows at work. (Some day I want to have a greenhouse for growing such things).
